At All Levels, Counselors:

  • Counsel students regarding academic, social/emotional, and college/career issues
  • Conduct small group counseling
  • Provide crisis counseling (team with Social Worker, other counselors if necessary)
  • Register new students (place in classes aligned with previous coursework, evaluate and transpose transcripts, help assimilate students)
  • Meet and develop relationships with students
  • Distribute schedules and standardized test results to students, interpret scores
  • Attend IEP meeting and provide input and consultation
  • Make referrals to community resources
  • Administer AP Testing
  • Conduct Academic Awards Night and 8th Grade Open House Night
  • Serve as 504 Plan Case Managers
  • Attend professional conferences and workshops
  • Consult with Social Worker, Dean, fellow House Counselors, Nurse, Psychologists, Teachers, Department Chairs, Director of Guidance, Administration, and Special Education Case Managers regarding students
  • Communicate with parents regarding academic, social/emotional, and college/career issues

College/Career Center

Our College/Career Center, headed by Susan Janes, is full of many wonderful resources and hosts Open Houses every other Wednesday evening.  Ms. Janes introduces the ACT DISCOVER Post High School Planning Program in sophomore English classes and hosts visits from college representatives.

Certified School Nurse

The certified nurse has the responsibility to monitor the health and welfare of all students and staff in the school which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Record review of all student's immunizations and physicals
  • Monitoring any infectious diseases in the school, reporting to the county health department and monitoring attendance
  • Responsibility for the health component of any special education student assessment
  • Assessing and educating regarding safety within the school
  • Classroom education in the science, health, PE and social science curriculum as requested
  • Communicating with parents regarding health regulations and requirements as well as planning for long term illnesses and ways to assist students to return to school as quickly and as safe as possible
  • Administration and monitoring of student's medications
  • Direct care of any injuries or illnesses

Social Workers

School Social Workers are a part of the total education team at NVHS.  They work together with colleagues from other disciplines to help enhance the educational experience for all students.

Their services are provided in a variety of ways that include, but are not limited to:

  • Crisis intervention
  • Direct individual or group work with students (regular and special education) as it relates to their academic functioning
  • Participation on child's special education team (screenings, IEP meetings, evaluations, 504)
  • Consultation with staff, parents, outside agencies
  • Develop and implement school programs as determined by building needs
  • Referrals to appropriate community agencies
  • Participation on a variety of building level teams
